DAP MP seeks court’s help on dubious voters

Klang MP Charles Santiago files a court application to compel the Election Commission to clean up its electoral roll for the Klang parliamentary seat.
PETALING JAYA: Klang MP Charles Santiago today filed a judicial review at the Shah Alam High Court for an order to compel the Election Commission (EC) to clean up the electoral roll at his parliamentary constituency.
The judicial application is also to compel the EC to reply to a letter sent by Santiago on Dec 21, 2012 on the said matter.
Speaking to FMT after filing the application, the DAP leader said that he had listed several examples in his court papers to prove there were discrepancies in his parliamentary constituency electoral roll, also known as P110.
Among others, Santiago said that on his check, he found 3,457 names missing from the current Klang electoral list. These were voters in 2008.
“I also found 2,195 names transferred out from P110 to other areas. There is also a resident in Teluk Pulai who got herself registered as a voter without her own knowledge,” he said.
Santiago added that he had mentioned the discrepancies to EC chairman Abdul Aziz Yusoff last year during a meeting at the Parliament.
Although Abdul Aziz had promised to look into the matter initially, Santiago claimed the former backtracked later by saying that the EC had no power to remove names from the electoral roll.
“And when I spoke about this matter to EC commissioner P Manoharan, he told me that the officer in charge was now busy with the royal commission proceedings in Sabah.
“So now I’m trying to get the court to compel EC to take action. This problem can be solved fast as it only involves about 6,000 names,” he said.
