DPM promises RM1.03m to woo Jelutong voters

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 5 — In a bid to woo voters from Jelutong, a DAP stronghold, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced an allocation of RM1.03 million for the constituency.
The Education Minister, who attended a BN Meet The People/Chinese New Year celebration at Taman Desa Green here, said the allocation is to show BN’s sincerity and its commitment to serve the people.
Out of the RM1.03 million, RM600,000 is for the upkeep and maintenance of low-cost flats in the constituency, RM200,000 for eight temple committees and religious associations, RM200,000 for the restoration of 100 dilapidated houses in Jelutong and RM30,000 for small traders and hawkers.
“This is to show that BN will always provide assistance to all Malaysians, regardless of their race, and to take good care of their welfare,” he said.
He mentioned the federal government’s various community and social programmes such as the student aid of RM100 and BR1M as proof of the government’s commitment towards assisting the people.
Gesturing to the crowd, Muhyiddin said it is not true that the ethnic Chinese do not support BN.
“Look, there are so many Chinese who came today so if we don’t have Chinese support, all of you won’t be here now,” he said.
He added that the Chinese community in Malaysia, especially the businessmen, have contributed a lot to the country’s economy.
Jelutong is notorious for its reputation as one of the roughest areas on the island and it is where DAP national chairman Karpal Singh earned the nicknamed ‘Tiger of Jelutong’ for holding on to the parliamentary seat for 20 years before losing it to then deputy secretary-general of Gerakan, Datuk Lee Kah Choon, in 1999.
DAP only managed to win back the seat in 2008 through newcomer Jeff Ooi, who is more well-known as an outspoken blogger.
