More benefits in store for Ropiaah in LTAT deal, says Rafizi

PETALING JAYA, Feb 20 – Umno’s Senator Datuk Raja Ropiaah Abdullah stands to profit millions of ringgit more from hidden clauses in the federal government’s plan to purchase a plot of land in Bukit Raja, Rafizi Ramli revealed today.
Rafizi, PKR’s strategic director, was allowed this morning to inspect the share and land sale agreement documents in Boustead Holdings Bhd, after he acquired shares in the firm.
“I was really shocked because when we checked the clauses one by one, actually there are more extremely scandalous parts hidden from the public and shareholders’ knowledge,” Rafizi said at a press conference here.
“Raja Ropiaah (picture) stands to gain hundreds of million of ringgits out of nothing."
Boustead, a unit of government investment fund Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT), announced last year a plan to buy an 80 per cent stake in businessman Deepak Jaikishan’s company, Astacanggih Sdn Bhd, for RM30 million as well as a RM130 million piece of land from Awan Megah Sdn Bhd, the firm of Selangor Wanita Umno chief Senator Datuk Raja Ropiaah Abdullah.
According to Rafizi, the Ministry of Defence has awarded Awan Megah a RM15 million-worth of additional contracts through a letter dated June 26, 2012 which has been previously unannounced.
Awan Megah also was awarded 23.2 acres of land out of the original three parcels of land measuring 223.2 acres, which is potentially worth millions of ringgit. Rafizi had claimed before that the parcels of land were never transferred to Awan Megah in the first place.
A sum of RM4 million was forwarded by Boustead to a proxy named Putra Nazrain Abdul Jalil to acquire the remaining 20 per cent of Astacanggih Sdn Bhd, which was previously owned by controversial carpet dealer Deepak Jaikishan.
Boustead’s subsidiary Bakti Wira Sdn Bhd also will be taking care of all Awan Megah’s financial commitment to plastic manufacturer GuppyUnip Sdn Bhd in order to nullify their previous joint-venture agreement.
In a previous deal, Awan Megah agreed to a joint venture with GuppyUnip, and a credit facility by the United Overseas Bank (UOB) was awarded to GuppyUnip to cover the capital for Awan Megah worth RM59.25 million, the premium for the land title transfer from the Selangor government, and the cost for the development site’s preparation.
In the documents, it was also agreed that Deepak should not be making any statements on the issue without permission from Boustead.
“This proves my allegation that the deal was done hastily only to silence Deepak,” said Rafizi, who had claimed last year that if the recent allegations made by Deepak over the murder of Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu had not been considered serious, it was unlikely that LTAT would have proceeded with the buyout.
Rafizi also repeated that he is “eager and ready” to face Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in court after the latter filed a defamation suit at the High Court last month. Rafizi insisted that Ahmad Zahid has yet to serve him with any suit.
The PKR strategy director promised more revelations to come regarding the deal since he has gathered much more information from his recent visit to Boustead.
“It’s going to be fun going into the elections,” he teased.
