IPOH, Feb 11 – Perak Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblymen today scoffed at Pakatan Rakyat’s (PR) prediction that they would win at least 40 of the state’s 59 state seats, claiming the opposition pact’s victory in Election 2008 was just a “fluke”.
The assemblymen claimed that PR’s marginal win in  the last poll would unlikely repeat, particularly since Perakians are now more informed of PR’s way of rule.
“The situation now is different, (PR) is aware that in the 12th general election (their victory) was actually a result of a fragmented BN,” Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin told The Malaysian Insider.
The Sungai Manik assemblyman claimed that BN itself was weakened in the last polls after members who were frustrated that they were not chosen to contest had decided to boycott the coalition and lent their support to PR.
“They forget that the issues that they could play up in 2008 are obsolete,” offered Perak BN secretary Datuk Ramly Zahari.
According to the Manong assemblyman, citizens can also now value the negative way PR rule their states, like Penang and Selangor, which he said are always at odds with the federal government.
They also laughed off suggestions that Perak people are angry with the constitutional crisis in 2009 when three assemblymen from PR declared themselves independent, prompting a new state government to be formed by BN.
“The crisis resulted from the opposition’s manipulation. The people now have been given clarification, they know how the transition happened,” Ramly explained.
Zainol denied that the people in his constituent still hold negative feelings about the events, claiming that Perak citizens were instead angry at PR for burdening them with controversies.
“They had to hold a meeting under a tree ... The other states were laughing at Perak. (PR assemblymen) were the ones who gave Perak a bad name,” he added.
Chenderiang assemblyman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon alleged that the crisis was caused by PR’s own internal conflict, which had caused the pact to seek for statesmen from BN to jump over to join PR.
“Sorry to say, but if I were the one in the position (of getting members to jump parties), I’d be ashamed of myself,” Dr Mah said, blasting PR of manipulating the issue to continue painting BN in bad light.
The assemblymen were convinced that the people of Perak are now better-informed in politics, and will appreciate the results gained by BN in their four-year rule of the state.
“It is as if the fog that shrouded the minds of the people has been lifted. They can see the sun clearly now,” Ramly declared.
Dr Mah confessed that Perak citizens, especially the Chinese community, are being won over by BN as the days go by. He praised the growth figure of the state, which he claimed is understated, for contributing to the support.
“What is important, is that we work hard for the people, and they will know,” the Perak MCA Youth chief said confidently.
“If the people have opened their minds, there is no place in Perak for the opposition,” Ramly added.
In Election 2008, PR won Perak by a slim majority, winning 32 assembly seats compared to BN’s 27. Later, one state assemblyman re-defected to BN while three PR assemblymen declared themselves independent and pledged their allegiance to BN.
Elected Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin then asked the Sultan of Perak Sultan Azlan Shah to dissolve the state assembly, but the Sultan told Nizar and his exco to resign instead.
Umno’s Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir was then asked by the Sultan to form the next government, and was sworn in on February 6, 2009.
The High Court in Kuala Lumpur ruled on May 2009 that the takeover was “illegal”, but the decision was overturned by the Court of Appeal on February 2010.
