Sabah PKR gets boost from ex-Berjaya duo

Two more Sabah BN personalities have joined PKR over the past week, forming a steady stream of one-way defections over the past few months.

The latest recruits are former Sabah assistant minister Yapin Gimpoton and former federal deputy minister Ahmadshah Tambakau. The duo were both members of the now-defunct Berjaya party.

NONEThe duo officially joined the party during PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's visit to the state during the first day of Chinese New Year on Feb 10.

In a press release yesterday, Sabah PKR secretary Roland Chia said the latest development was a boost for Sabah Pakatan Rakyat.

"We welcome anyone who subscribed to the agenda of change for a better Sabah and Malaysia through the Pakatan platform," he said.

According to Chia, Gimpoton had once supported the PKR candidate who was contesting in Kadamaian, a seat he formerly represented, in 2008.

As for Ahmadshah, Chia said he was making a political comeback with a focus on the rural parliamentary seat of Keningau.

Another possible defection

Chia also dropped strong hints that PKR is also in contact with former Sabah chief minister Chong Kah Kiat, another former Berjaya politician.

NONEHe said that Sabah PKR "welcomed" rumours that Chong was "supportive" of PKR, but stopped short of denying or confirming the rumours.

"These (developments) shows that even former senior BN leaders are rejecting the present BN government that has failed to serve the needs and the aspiration of the Sabahans and Malaysians," he said.

Chong, who is currently the advisor to Sabah's Liberal Democratic Party, is widely known to have a grudge against long-serving Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman.

He quit his post as deputy chief minister in April 2007 in a huff, stating that his decision was a "matter of principle".

Following the defection of Beaufort MP Lajim Ukin and Tuaran MP Wilfred Bumburing from BN, several other notable Sabah political personalities have followed suit.

They were soon followed by former senator Maijol Mahap,  former Sabah Umno treasurer Ibrahim Menudin, former Tanjung Aru Umno chief Yahya Lampong dan former works department director-general Richard Gunting.
