Student group set to challenge PM in GE13

A group of students have announced that they will be nominating a candidate to challenge Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak in his Pekan constituency in the upcoming general election.
The group, dubbed "Gerakan Mahasiswa PRU13", told a press conference today that this is to show the sentiments of university students, whom they claim are rejecting Najib’s administration.

Its chairperson Syis Abdul Kadir said that the chosen candidate would be announced as soon as Najib announces the date of the 13th general election, and that the group is choosing between several potential candidates among themselves at the moment.
NONEHe also claimed that the group would mobilise some 500 students for election campaigning work, raising student issues in order to woo Pekan’s voters.

“Student issues are not merely student issues - issues such as free education are about the National Higher Education Fund (PTPTN), where parents (and not students) become its guarantors.

“Student issues are actually the people’s issues,” Syis said.

In addition, the group announced that they will be visiting Pekan from Feb 11 to Feb 17 to “approach and understand the hardship of the people”.

Also present at the press conference to endorse the move are student groups such as Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis), Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM), and Aksi Mahasiswa Peduli (Aksi).

Students have been allowed to participate in politics, including the elections, since amendments were made to the Universities and University Colleges Act last year.
