We're looking for Pornthip replacement, says lawyer

A lawyer for the family of C Sugumar said they are looking for a replacement for Thai pathologist Dr Pornthip Rojanasunand, who declined an invitation to perform a second independent post-mortem on his dead body.

According to N Surendran, he was informed by Dr Pornthip of the decision through an email earlier this morning.

NONEEarlier, Surendran (left) and another lawyer, Latheefa Koya, had announced that Pornthip had agreed to carry out the second post-mortem and was due to arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Jan 20.

He is now discussing the matter with the family of the deceased.

“We will look for another pathologist to perform the second post-mortem,” Surendran told Malaysiakini.

Pornthip had observed the second post-mortem on DAP political aide Teoh Beng Hock, who died in 2009 after a “fall from height” from the Selangor headquarters of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission in Shah Alam.

According to Surendran, the current law stipulates that a post-mortem can only be done by a government hospital.

Therefore, they are facing some difficulty in getting a local pathologist from a private hospital to proceed with the second post-mortem.

However, they are also considering the possibility of having experts from University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) - a semi-private hospital - to perform the second post-mortem.

Surendran said the family members are determined to go ahead with the post-mortem after being given the green light by police.

“Whatever it is, even though Dr Pornthip could not do it, we will continue this struggle to uphold justice for Sugumar,” said Surendran, who is also a PKR vice-president.

Sugumar, 40, was found dead while handcuffed and his face smeared with turmeric powder on Jan 23 in Hulu Langat.

Police have classified his death as sudden death, but his family insisted that his death be investigated as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
