Wong Tack threatens to torch Lynas plant, after GE

Environmental group Himpunan Hijau president Wong Tack has threatened to burn down the Lynas rare earths refinery in Gebeng, Kuantan, should the plant still be running after the 13th general election.

Regardless of whether BN continues to rule or Pakatan Rakyat forms the new federal government, Wong said, he would personally set fire to the plant if it was not closed down in 30 days after the general election.

NONEWong (left) also threatened to call for street demonstrations to topple the new government if the demand to shut down the Lynas plant was not met,Sin Chew Daily reported today.

"We support Pakatan because their leader Anwar Ibrahim has promised the people that they would close the rare earths refinery as well as the gold mine in Bukit Koman if they come into power.

"We cherish peace, hence since the demonstration in front of the rare earths refinery on Dec 31. We will not call any demonstration.

"Instead we are prepared to work democratically during the general election to help Pakatan to topple the BN and form a new government," the Chinese daily quotes Wong as saying at a PKR event in Kuantan.

Himpunan Hijau has stated its resolve to campaign for Pakatan in the coming general election, vowing to see the BN out in six parliamentary seats it dubbed the "Pahang green corridor".

Wong said the action to burn down the Lynas plant would be the last resort and the action would not hurt anyone as the sole objective of Himpunan Hijau was to stop the plant from endangering the health and lives of the people.

The activist said he was also ready to face any legal responsibility.

Wong also repeated that he was not interested in contesting in the coming general election, adding, "I think the role of an activist suits me more."
