Border security must be tightened, says Dr M

KUALA LUMPUR, March 1 — Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today urged security forces to tighten security at border areas and territorial waters to prevent the country from being intruded by outsiders, like what has happened in Lahad Datu, Sabah.
“It was so easy for the unsophisticated group to enter our country. This means that we must upgrade security so that nobody can intrude,” he told reporters after opening the Tradition and Continuity Exhibition: Woven and Decorated Textiles of the Malay Peninsula at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia here.
Dr Mahathir (picture) said the opposition would certainly the issue as political capital to get the people’s support.
“The opposition will use everything because to them, anything can be turned into a political issue,” said the former prime minister.
Earlier, he said for traditional textile to remain relevant and competitive in the 21st century, the craft makers and artisans must continue to strive towards meeting the ever-changing market demands.
“However, we must be reminded that beyond their utilitarian functions, textiles serve to uphold our long standing tradition, particularly during rituals and ceremonies.”
Dr Mahathir urged museums to collect, conserve and preserve textile heritage as well as continue research, document and exhibit textile collections.
He stressed that such efforts are catalysts towards fostering awareness on the importance of traditional Malaysian textiles and craft, not only for the present but also for future generations.
The exhibition showcases over 50 pieces of Malay textiles specially dedicated to icon and culture lover of Malaysia, the late Azah Aziz.
Held at Galeri Khas 2, Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, the exhibition runs from March 2 to June 30. — Bernama
