Don’t follow blindly, Dr M tells youths


The country's progress also hinged on security and every individuals should love the country and instil a patriotic spirit and ready to safeguard its sovereignty.
KOTA KINABALU: As the younger generation can acquire unlimited knowledge, they should think and evaluate any opinion and influence, especially from abroad, said former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“If young people want to see the country developed, it is not enough to master current knowledge, but also to adopt noble values and good character to enable them to contribute to the progress of the country.
“This role is important to youngsters in the country,” he said when delivering a premier lecture at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Likas here last night.
He said young people should also appreciate the efforts and struggles made by leaders of yesteryears, who were instrumental in developing the country, for the progress achieved did not come by itself.
“We are aware that the progress, comfortable life and happiness do not come easily but through great efforts.
“If we realise that, we can prepare ourselves for a better future by acquiring knowledge that is not static and that can be enhanced throughout our life,” he added.
Mahathir said the country’s progress also hinged on security and every individuals should love the country and instil a patriotic spirit and ready to safeguard its sovereignty.
He said hence, the people should also appreciate the role played by the security forces in defending the country against foreign intrusion.
Commending UMS on the setting up of the Centre for Strategic Studies, he said it was a wise and timely effort for research was being carried out on the types of past and present wars, especially guerrilla warfare.
