Pengerang folk get a boost

High Court grants residents, seeking to delay RM60 billion RAPID project in Johor, leave application for a judicial review.
PETALING JAYA: Pengerang residents opposing the ongoing RM60 billion Refinery And Petrochemical Integrated Development (RAPID) project received a morale booster today when the Kuala Lumpur High Court allowed their leave application for a judicial review.
Despite objections by the Attorney-General’s Chambers, High Court judge Zaleha Yusof allowed the application, said Azhana Khairuddin, one of the lawyers for the residents.
Azhana said that the AG objected to the hearing of the application on two grounds – that it was “frivolous and vexatious, and had lapsed the time period”.
Zaleha ruled that there were merits for the case to proceed and allowed the leave for a judicial review.
The AG’s Chambers was represented by senior federal counsel M Kogilambigai while Hanipa Maidin, Nasar Khan and Azhana were the lawyers for the residents.
PAS, along with local NGOs, have been in the forefront of opposing the project due to environmental concerns, inadequate information and relocation of people from the project area.
In September last year, a mammoth gathering was held in Pengerang to oppose the project.
In January, Pengerang Land Takeover Action Body (MANTAP) chairman Salehuddin Ayub declared it would oppose the project through legal means.
