UIA to screen controversial film 'Tanda Putera'

The controversial film ‘Tanda Putera' is slated to be screened at the Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Malaysia (UIA) at 9pm tonight.

The screening is organised by Kelab Wawasan UIA with cooperation from the university's Students' Affairs Department, revealed a student group.

NONEAccording to We Unite for Islam UIA president Mohd Najib Abdul Rahim, each of the university's residential colleges have been asked to send six students for the screening, while attendance is compulsory for Police Undergraduate Voluntary Corps and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Unit members.

"Those who attend would also be awarded ‘Star Points'," added Mohd Najib, referring to a merit point system where students need to earn a certain number of points through participation in extra-curricular activities to qualify to stay at the residential colleges.

The student leader expressed disappointment that the film is allowed to be aired, whereas a forum organised by the UIA student council on the upcoming general election was abruptly cancelled by the Students' Affairs Department.

UIA administration backs screening

‘Tanda Putera' has passed the Film Censorship Board's scrutiny, but it has yet to be aired in cinemas amid allegations that its portrayal of the May 13 riots contained racial elements. Last November, the cabinet said the movie was not appropriate to be screened in public.
NONEOn Feb 18, some 3,000 Felda settlers were treated to aclosed-door screening at the Putra World Trade Centre at a function officiated by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

When contacted, a UIAM Students' Affairs Department official confirmed tonight's screening, which is slated to be held at the university's main auditorium, near the administrative building.

He told Malaysiakini the screening was authorised by the campus authorities as the decision was made by the university's rector.

However, he said the event is subject to last-minute cancellations if there are "orders from above" to do so.
