An armed intruder who attempted to single handedly take 80 people hostage in Kampung Senallang Lama, Semporna resulted in him being lynched to death.
Sabah police chief Hamzah Taib told a press conference at Lahad Datu today the man had escaped from Kampung Sri Jaya Simunul, Semporna which has been cordoned off by the police.
"He made the people there hostage with a M16 and a grenade launcher.
"He went house to house and demanded all 80 of the villagers to come out and instructed them to (enter) a mosque.
"Twenty youths, who were instructed to go to the mosque, then retaliated by beating him up and killing him," he said.
He added that the two villages are only 7km apart.
No info on more hostages
Hamzah noted that the youths' action may appear unlawful but said they had a right to defend themselves.
"This man (who was killed) is of Sulu descent and in his 60s," he said.
Asked if there were others being held hostage, Hamzah said the police had yet to receive any such information.
"So far, I cannot verify (this). I know the Philliphines media have reported that they (intruders) are holding police officers hostage but so far we have not received any information about this.
"If we receive such information, we will inform the public," he said.

Caught off guard
According to Bernama, the Kampung Senallang Lama incident happened at 7am this morning
Villager, Abdul Hani Samaullah, 44, told Bernama that the man pierced the early morning calm by shouting, ”I’m the one who shot the police last night."
"The man then kicked open the doors of the houses and ordered the villagers to gather at a vacant area," said Abdul Hani, who was also in the frightened group of people.
He said the villagers attacked the man when he squatted down to light a cigarette and put down his rifle.
The man was beaten to death and his body placed under a tree in the village.
A Bernama reporter on his way to cover the opening of a new bridge by Rural and Regional Development Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal in Kampung Nihak Nihak, about 30 kilometres away at 8.30 am, managed to see the body of the man whose head was covered in blood.
The villagers were seen packing their clothes and vacating their homes for the safety of neighbouring villages.
Most of the residents were farmers and oil palm planters.
