26-year-old man dies in custody in Batu Gajah

A 26-year-old man has died in custody in Batu Gajah, Perak, adding to a steady stream of custodial deaths in 2013.

According to the deceased’s father, Chew Ba, he received a call from Pusat Pemulihan Akhlak Penjara Batu Gajah informing him of his son Chew Siang Giap’s death at 2.19 this morning.

In his police report, the elder Chew said he had arrived at the Batu Gajah Hospital at 8.30am today to identify his son and found “marks” on his body.

“When I identified him, I found black marks which look like bruises on his ear, shoulder and thigh,” he said in the police report distributed to media at the Parliament lobby by DAP’s Batu Gajah MP V Sivakumar.
