Ahmad Zahid riled up over 'assault' claim

VIDEO | 3 min

PARLIAMENT
A shouting match erupted in the Dewan Rakyat today after a DAP member of parliament raised the issue of a police report against Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

NONEGobind Singh Deo (DAP-Puchong, left) mentioned the police action in relation to a complaint of assault against Ahmad Zahid, while the latter was winding up on points related to his ministry that had been raised during the debate on the royal address.

Although speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia said this had been asked in bad faith, Gobind attempted to rephrase his question several times.

This prompted a visibly agitated Zahid to accuse Gobind of having asked the question out of personal interest.

Gobind is the lawyer for the complainant in the ongoing civil case against Zahid.

"If I am kaki pukul, then Puchong (Gobind) is a bigger kaki pukul than me," Zahid said.
This prompted Gobind to challenge Zahid to repeat his statement outside the House.

“Repeat it outside, I will sue you,” Gobind said strongly.

Zahid, in his short answer to Gobind’s question, said that the matter raised is now a civil case and is no longer a criminal case.

“That is a criminal accusation, now this is a civil case,” Zahid said.

He said that the case was lodged when he was a deputy minister in 2006 and investigation was completed way before he became the home minister.

Zahid had been accused of assaulting and attempting to murder a businessman in 2006.

Pandikar told Gobind that the question cannot be answered by Zahid since it directly implicates the latter and would represent a conflict of interest.
Exchange ended by Pandikar

The 22-minute exchange had to be ended by Pandikar by issuing a threat to eject any parliamentarians who dragged the issue further by raising standing orders in the House.

This was after four MPs from both sides of the political divide attempted to raise standing orders - with BN MPs urging the speaker to censure Gobind and the Pakatan MPs urging Zahid to answer the question that has been raised.

The BN MPs, especially Reezal Merican Naina Merican (BN-Kepala Batas) even urged Gobind to disclose the “financial benefits” he is gaining from his client because his question was “of personal interest”.

He was among five BN MPs who continuously heckled Gobind every time he stood up to further explain the reasoning behind his question.

The MPs also claimed that raising the matter was sub judice since a court proceeding was under way on the same matter, but Pandikar did not make a sub judice ruling on the matter.

“What’s your problem, what’s your problem?” Gobind asked at the BN MPs as they continued making noise whenever he stood up.

Pandikar at one point had to ask the BN MPs to keep quiet as he wanted to hear Gobind’s clarification himself.

Gobind unsuccessfully attempted to raise a standing order himself in order to get the speaker to censure Zahid for alleging that he was akaki pukul, but Pandikar said he had enough of the matter and urged Zahid to move on and answer other questions.
Zahid: Because you (Gobind) are the lawyer, you have interest, making such an allegation while investigation has been made at that time and this is not criminal case but civil, you have interest...

(Gobind attempts to interject)

Zahid: If I listen to you, you listen to me! It will be better if Puchong is not so biadap (insolent). This is a civil case, so in this case don't... we’ll see in court.

Gobind: Why no police action?

Zahid: Between my character and his - if I am kaki pukul, he is a bigger kaki pukul than me.

Pandikar: Sit down, sit down... (to all MPs).

Reezal Merican: Standing Order 35 (6) One cannot say anything that has an exact interest for himself - if it’s not explained explicitly how much interest he has in the matter, I want the speaker to make a ruling.

Noh Omar: (Puchong) Doesn’t deserve to talk because there if financial interest - declare your interest - amount...

Pandikar (to Zahid): Please continue...

Gobind: Point of order, (noise from other MPs).

Zahid: We see in court lah!

Gobind: I got no problem (with that), I want to listen to an answer from the minister. Minister said I am kaki pukul.

Pandikar: Puchong (Gobind), sit down!

Gobind: If you are brave repeat it outside Parliament.

Pandikar: Order, order (knocks the table twice). The issue is settled. That’s it, we have wasted a lot of time in this issue. When you (MPs) answer comes out (from your speech) things that shouldn’t have come out...
