Anwar to sue Berita Harian for 'evil slander'

PARLIAMENT Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim has declared in the Dewan Rakyat that he will sue Berita Harian for “evil slander” relating to the allegation that Pakatan Rakyat had ‘received foreign funds’ for its 'Black 505' protests.

His announcement was followed by BN parliamentarians continuing to cite the Malay daily's report which purportedly quoted former Indonesian vice-president Jusuf Kalla.

NONE"I have decided to sue Berita Harian for this evil slander. Despite the open explanation by Jusuf in the media, why is the Home Ministry taking months to explain the matter?" posed Anwar.

He had, during Question Time today, read out a text-message by Jusuf denying that he had ever made such a statement.

Anwar also told Deputy Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar to come clean on the status of investigation into the matter, to clear the air once and for all.

He said that Jusuf had also sent four letters to the daily’s top managers seeking rectification.

Earlier, Reezal Merican Naina Merican (BN-Kepala Batas) had queried the Home Ministry on whether the authorities have investigated the claim that Anwar had received foreign funds.

"I want a honest answer. What is the (status of) investigations of Jusuf's claim involving foreign funds ... it involves the security of this country," he said.

However, Wan Junaidi declined to respond, stating that matters concerning flow of foreign funds do not fall within the ministry's jurisdiction.

"If I give you a wrong answer, I can be referred to the committee (of rights and privileges). So I sincerely tell you, I do not have the answers ... I cannot give you what I do not have," he said.

reezal merican naina mericanThe drama was brought forward when Reezal Merican (right) interjected as Anwar was debating the Supplementary Supply (2012) Bill.

"I have just called Berita Harian's office and they said their legal department has not received any letter," said Reezal Merican.

Anwar reiterated Jusuf's denial, adding: "Whether Berita Harian received the letter or not is something for the court to decide.”

He lamented that, despite the accusation being publicised, the daily had ignored his explanation and right of reply.
