Apologise publicly over 'racist docs' claim, rep told

Penang state executive councillor in charge of health Dr Afif Bahardin wants an Umno state assemblyperson to apologise over his allegations that three doctors in two public hospitals in the state had refused to treat their Malay patients.

Dr Afif BahardinAfif (left) wants Pinang Tunggal assemblyperson Roslan Saidin to apologise publicly to all the doctors in the country for accusing the three Chinese Malaysian doctors - two from Seberang Jaya and the other from Kepala Batas - of being racist during the recently-concluded state legislative assembly earlier this month.

“His failure to produce any evidence shows the irresponsible attitude of an Umno leader,” Dr Afif said in a statement today.

“Roslan’s accusations are more like him venting his frustrations over the dwindling support of the people towards him,” he added.

When he raised the matter in the Dewan, Roslan had tried to tie the doctors’ alleged racist attitude to the decreasing support of the non-Malay voters to Barisan Nasional in the just-concluded 13th general election.

“Up to today, neither the Penang government nor the Health Ministry has received an official report regarding the issue, and even the patients allegedly involved have yet to come forward with the complaint,” he stressed.

Afif was responding to the comment by Deputy Health Minister Dr Hilmi Yahya who was reported by Bernama as saying on July 19 that Roslan's allegations were a “misunderstanding”.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has come out strongly to urge the relevant departments to conduct a probe on the matter, urgingRoslan to provide proof, or else apologise to the entire medical profession.

Lim had also written to Health Minister S Subramaniam about the matter and the latter had said that his department was investigating the matter.

He added that if the allegations proved to be true, the doctors involved should be sacked and their practising licences revoked as they would have violated their Hippocratic Oath for their alleged racist attitude.

Roslan refuses to apologise

When contacted, Roslan refused to apologise over his allegations, saying that the case is currently under probe by the state Health Department and the status of the matter will be known in a few days.

He added that he has submitted the relevant information to the department.

“In one or two days, you can check the status of the probe with the state Health Department,” he said.

“I hope if the case proves to be true, action should be taken on the doctors. More than that, Afif should say sorry to me,” he added.

NONERoslan (right) said he did not reveal the names of the doctors in the state assembly because it was not professional to do so.

“The persons involved were not there and they cannot defend themselves,” he said.

“I am not trying to get anyone into trouble but as an assemblyperson, the problem was brought to me and I have to raise it,” he added.

When ask about Hilmi’s comment that his allegations were just a misunderstanding, Roslan replied, “Let it be”.
