BN denies dishing 'duit raya' of up to RM800 to voters

KUALA BESUT The BN denied today that it is giving away ‘duit raya' of up to RM800 per person to Kuala Besut voters, saying the claim is a slander by PAS.

NONEUmno information chief Ahmad Maslan (right) said he came across a copy of letter making this claim at a mosque in Kuala Besut after dawn prayers today, and later also found that the claim has been spread, house-to-house.

The letter, bearing the letterhead of the BN's Kuala Besut by-election operations headquarters, states that the BN by-election director Muhyiddin Yassin approved the money for Kuala Besut voters on July 13, at a meeting of the coalition's by-election machinery.

It says that senior citizens are eligible for RM800 per person, while heads of families are eligible for RM700 each, youths RM600 each and women RM600 each.

"An advance of RM300 will be given on July 22. Please bring a name list of recipients (including opposition members and supporters) to the management to facilitate the necessary," says the letter dated July 14 and addressed to village chiefs and BN polling centre heads.

Malaysiakini also found a copy of the letter, lying by the side of a road in downtown Kuala Besut.

"This is purely slander because on July 13, when the meeting was supposedly held, he (Muhyiddin) was not in Kuala Besut," BN's by-election deputy director Idris Jusoh told a press conference today.
He added that Kuala Besut BN election machinery secretary Salleh Abdul Latif has already lodged a police report this morning at the Kuala Besut police station over the matter.
'Punish PAS for slandering'

He also urged voters to punish PAS for slandering during the fasting month despite promising a clean campaign.

“This party must be rejected because it never honours its promises (of a clean campaign) and never respects the holy month of Ramadhan.

“This party is only good at reading the Quran but not practising it,” he said.

However, Muhyiddin was indeed in Kuala Besut that day. His programmes, among others, were to launch the groundbreaking ceremony for the affordable housing block in Kampung Lay Out, Tok Saboh. Idris himself was also present at the event as the Besut MP.

Meanwhile, Ahmad claims that voters have already approached him and BN branch chiefs for the money, and have even turned up at the address in the July 14 letter’s letterhead.

“One of their (PAS) objective is to split up (BN’s) machinery and incite hatred from the voters. This is because the letter was distributed today whereas it says that the advance was paid out on the 22nd (yesterday).

“People will get angry asking why were they not informed in advance that the money will be disbursed,” he said.
