Earthquake jolts northern Sumatra, tremors in Penang


A strong earthquake occurred about 3.32pm today in northern Sumatra, Indonesia.
Those in Penang felt the tremors in tall buildings like Komtar - the state administrative tower - and surrounding areas in George Town.

The earthquake occurred 65km south-west of Lhokseumawe, and recorded a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department sent out a preliminary earthquake alert at 3.44pm.
Reuters quoted the the US Geological Survey as saying that the shallow quake, which was only 10 km deep, struck 188km  south-east of Banda Aceh, the capital of Aceh province.
There was no tsunami warning and no reports of damage in the capital.
