Ex-USM dean faces false travel claims charges


A university don today claimed trial to three charges of allegedly making false travel claims from University Sains Malaysia in 2010.

Prof Ambigapathy Pandian, 56, (below) former dean of the School of Language, Literacy and Translation, was charged allegedly with committing the offences  between Feb 10, 2010 and June 7, 2010.

NONEHe was alleged to have committed the offences at an office in the university.The claims amounted to RM1,242.

The charges under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 (Act 694) and punishable under Section 24 of the same act.

The offence carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of RM10,000 or five times the value of the claims, whichever is higher, according to the Act.

Judge Khairul Anuar Abdul Halim set bail at RM8,000 in one surety and fixed Aug 16 for mention. 

Ambigapathy was represented by Lawyer M. Athimulan while Deputy Public Prosecutor Janariah Abdul Mutalib appeared for the prosecution.
