HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? Don't be childish & immature - Rafizi slams Paul Low
MP for Pandan Rafizi Ramli chided Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low for comments made a day ago that "publicity-hungry politicians" lodge reports with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
Paul, the former president of Transparency International Malaysia, has also said that such politicians "do not provide facts", and this made it tough for the MACC to open investigation files.
Paul's comments, seen as a bid to defend the MACC, comes as the graft-buster draws renewed criticism for its consistent failure to go after 'big fish' such as the scandal-tainted Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud.
"Paul Low should state, out of all reports that have been lodged with MACC, how many of them are lodged by these politicians," Rafizi told a press conference at the Parliament lobby on Tuesday.
“This is a very irresponsible statement, you cannot make partisan statements like these. He was brought into the cabinet to bring credibility into the cabinet. I would understand if this statement had come from Bung Moktar but not from Paul Low, who had a background in fighting corruption.”

What happened to you, Paul Low
Rafizi  warned that such statements from Paul may further discourage whistle blowers from lodging complaints with the MACC.
The PKR strategy director had just last week queried the MACC on its low 'hit rate', whereby it could only investigate one case out of every 5 complaints lodged.
"The people are still not confident in the MACC and as a result, the number of people coming forward to offer information or to report to the MACC is only 0.02% per capita or 0.02 of our population of 28 million. This translates to about 6,000 a year. That is very low by international standards because if you look at Hong Kong, their number is 0.06% per capita or times higher than ours," Rafizi had said.
"And this is very important, it has everything to do with confidence in MACC.  It will not help the MACC if people do not come forward because they lack confidence in the MACC to follow through (and prosecute). Worst of all, if out of 5 informers, only 1 results in investigation, the people will be further deterred because what's the point? You take the trouble to lodge the reports but nothing is done."
