'Karpal presidency' mocks Umno's Ramadan politics

DAP has blasted Deputy Agriculture Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman’s “racist lies and provocation” as a mockery of the Ramadan politics of restraint promised in the Kuala Besut campaigning.

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang pointed out that only yesterday Foreign Minister Anifah Aman had completed a seven-day three-nation European tour to promote Malaysia's ‘Global Movement of the Moderates’ initiative.

“But on the very same day, Tajuddin was doing his worst in spouting the most irresponsible and reckless form of extremism in the Kuala Besut by-election with his racist lies and provocations, making a total mockery of the pledge by the contestants that the by-election will be a model of ‘Ramadan politics’ of restraint and morality to show respect to the holy month.

“In fact, it would be difficult to find so many reckless and irresponsible racist lies and provocations packed into one speech as that delivered by Tajuddin in Kuala Besut yesterday,” said Lim in a statement today.

During a programme yesterday organised by the Veterinary Services Department in Kampung Baharu, Kuala Besut, Tajuddin launched intoDAP-bashing in an attempt to woo voters towards BN.

The Umno supreme council member warned voters that choosing PAS was akin to handing the country’s governance to DAP, that he claimed would singlehandedly amend the federal constitution to turn Malaysia into a republic and install Karpal Singh as the country’s president.

Lim said despite the campaign being held in the holiest month of the Muslim calendar, Umno appears remorseless such as shown by Umno deputy Muhyiddin Yassin’s refusal to respond to calls to either substantiate or apologise for similar remarks as Tajuddin’s.

“But Muhyiddin did neither - showing the hollow commitment of the No 2 leader in the Umno/BN government to truth, morality and integrity,” he said.

That Umno has to stoop to such a level despite Kuala Besut being an Umno stronghold where it has boasted it can increase its earlier winning majority, only showed its leaders’ “desperation” said Lim.

He said the ball is now in Prime Minister Najib Razak’s court to act against Tajuddin’s statements.

“Najib has often said that Umno must change or Umno will be changed. Is Najib capable of leading Umno to bring about this change, starting by taking a stand against Tajuddin ...

“Or will he continue to keep his silence despite such monstrous lies and falsehoods which completely discredit his ‘national reconciliation’ and ‘Global Movement of the Moderates’ initiatives?”
