No bail for “bak kut teh” bloggers a lesson to all, says home minister

The decision by the court in not granting bail to couple Alvin Tan and Vivian Lee for mocking Islam should be a lesson for everyone.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said it should be a lesson for young people not to mock other people's religious beliefs.

"Any form of insult, although initially for fun, but on sensitive matters, including on religion, they should not be made fun of and cannot be compromised," he told reporters after the breaking of fast with the Malaysian Civil Defence Department in Bangi, Selangor yesterday.

He said the peace and harmony in the country should be preserved by all and they should not attempt to touch on matters which have been established in the Federal Constitution, such as on Islam being the official religion of the country.

Tan or his full name, Tan Jye Yee, 25, and Lee, or Lee May Ling, 24, pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court yesterday to three charges related to their action of posting a Ramadan bak kut teh greeting on their Facebook page and pornographic pictures on their blogs.

Deputy public prosecutor Noorin Badaruddin asked the court to not grant them bail because of their tendency to upload pictures that could arouse public outrage. – Bernama
