No need to amend law for AES - Hisham

No need to amend law for AES - Hisham
There is no need for legal amendments to be made to implement the Automated Enforcement System (AES).
Acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said the system had some limitations and weaknesses, but the priority was still the safety of road users.
"There is no need to amend the law. What is important is to rectify the weaknesses in the implementation without fear or favour.
"Issues which had been raised, whether positive or negative, should not divert our attention from the objective of the AES, which is road safety," he said.
Speaking to reporters after launching the new high security driving licence design at the Selangor Road Transport Department, here yesterday, Hishammuddin said the ministry had narrowed down three or four options to improve the system after consulting the Attorney General's Chambers, Royal Malaysian Police, concessionaires and taking into account the views of the public.
"I will present to the cabinet the options to be decided on."
The AES system is currently being reviewed by the AG's Chambers due to various technical and legal issues following its implementation last year.
Pakatan Rakyat leaders have questioned the efficacy of the system, which saw 831 cameras installed in traffic hotspots nationwide to reduce road accidents.
On a separate matter, Hishammuddin who is also Defence Minister, said Malaysia Airlines has agreed to fly back Malaysian students studying in Egypt if the need arises.
However, the timing would be up to the National Security Council and Wisma Putra.
