PAS MP seeks female dress code to curb crime

A woman MP from PAS suggested today that the government enacts laws to prevent women from wearing "indecent" clothing, in order to curb sexual crimes.

Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (PAS-Rantau Panjang) told the Dewan Rakyat that short pants and short dresses were "among the factors" for such crimes.

NONE"This culture of women wearing short pants... it is indecent. Take for example the dressing of stewardess," Siti Zailah (right) said when Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Rohani Abdul Karim was winding up for the ministry on the motion of thanks for the Royal Address.

In view of this, Siti Zailah  urged the ministry to enforce a dress code, which he said would also help prevent sexual harassment.

Siti Zailah, who is also the PAS Muslimat chief, said "indecent" dressing among women was a "new phenomenon" and she took a jab at BN for contributing to this.

"Maybe this (trend) is because BN leaders (are) bringing in artistes from (South) Korea," she said.
Meanwhile, Fuziah Salleh (PKR-Kuantan) urged the government to implement a better legal framework to deal with sexual harassment cases, pointing out that such incidents have even taken place in the Parliament building.

Speaking to journalists later, Fuziah said one incident took place at the Parliament cafe last Thursday.

“It happened in front of my eyes, this woman MP who is also a state assemblyperson, was not appointed as an exco member. This officer commented that she did not flash her skirt and that is why she was not appointed.

“I was there and this MP did not know how to respond. Women just do not know how to answer when confronted with that kind of situation,” Fuziah said.

As such, she said, the government’s guidelines in dealing with sexual harassment were insufficient and a legal framework must exist to deal with such offenders.
