Stop the mega-highway hot gas, just GIVE US STREET LAMPS - Works minister slammed
A street lamp is not very expensive and investing in a few thousands of street lamps to light the way for rural junctions throughout the State should be a priority.
I welcome the announcement by Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof yesterday that the 400-km dual-lane Pan-Borneo trunk road from Sibu to Miri will be upgraded to a highway latest by 2015.
I further applaud the Minister’s plan to upgrade the 186-km stretch between Serian and Betong, and to create more overtaking lanes along the trunk road. This stretch of road is probably one of the busiest stretches along the Pan-Borneo Highway and is plied by commercial vehicles, private drivers and local residents living along this main thoroughfare that links Kuching to the various Divisions in the southern part of Sarawak.
My main concern is the lack of adequate street and road lighting along this stretch. I would like to especially draw the Minister’s attention to the various junctions along the Betong-Saratok stretch. From the turn-off into Betong town right up to the turn-off into Saratok town, there are hardly any road lights or street lights to clearly illuminate the various sign-boards and turn-offs.
For example, Simpang Layar, Simpang Paku, Simpang Rimbas, Simpang Spaoh and Simpang Debak are all without bright road lighting. The short-cut from Betong town to Simpang Layar is just as bad and the sharp turning at Simpang Padeh is totally in darkness.
Get the priorities right
Navigating these junctions at night is always a hazardous obstacle. The danger is especially for local residents who are turning into or out of these junctions.
This is the only main road going through the division and local drivers who are returning homes at night via these junctions have to brave the dangers of oncoming speeding traffic. It is even more hazardous for villagers walking along the main road at night.
The residents of Betong hope that the Minister will add the need for good street and road lighting into the budget of upgrading such stretches of the Pan-Borney Highway where choke points and junctions exist.
A street lamp is not very expensive and investing in a few thousands of street lamps to light the way for rural junctions throughout the State should be a priority that the Minister would hopefully consider.
