YTL’s Education Ministry projects queried

Questions arise over YTL Corporation's capability in handling the Education Ministry contracts, said Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari.
PETALING JAYA: Bukit Bendera MP Zairil Khir Johari has questioned whether three projects awarded by the Education Ministry to YTL Corporation Berhad was through open tender.
“Since when did YTL become a company with expertise in the education sector?
“What makes YTL the best choice to provide not only the VLE software but also the Chromebook hardware when they are neither a software developer nor computer manufacturer?” Zairil asked.
The first-term DAP MP said this in a press statement regarding the government’s plans to provide wireless Internet services in 10,000 schools throughout Malaysia.
VLE is a virtual-learning environment for students, teachers and parents.
The three projects awarded to the company are:
a) High-speed 4G broadband project worth RM663mil under the 1BestariNet programme to all schools for two and half years;
b) Virtual-learning Environment (VLE) platform for teachers, students and parents which costs RM250.5mil for fixed-term licensing fees and RM262.8mil for management and maintenance costs; and
c) Chromebooks under the 1Student 1Device programme worth RM39.6mil for an initial order of 116,399 units at a cost of RM1,200 per unit.
He also questioned whether the three projects were awarded based on open tender.
Plans to introduce e-learning was unveiled by the government in February when Education Minister Muhyiddin Yassin launched it as 1BestariNet programme.
He said the company, which is involved in utilities, construction, property and internet service, had been awarded the three projects with a total value of RM1.32bil.
Zairil wants the ministry to clear the air as there are concerns over the use of a large amount of public funds.
